Good news could be on the way for senior citizens in India, as the government is reportedly considering restoring railway ticket concessions in Union Budget 2026. According to reports, the Ministry of Railways and the Finance Ministry are discussing a proposal to bring back discounts that were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. If approved, elderly passengers could once again receive up to 50 percent fare concessions on train tickets, making travel more affordable for millions of retirees.
Sources suggest that the revived scheme may offer around 40 percent discount for male senior citizens aged 60 and above, and up to 50 percent for women aged 58 and above, similar to the pre-pandemic policy. Officials believe the move could significantly benefit older travellers who rely heavily on trains for long-distance journeys, especially those living on fixed pensions and limited incomes. The final announcement is expected in the Union Budget 2026.
