Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has stirred fresh controversy in India’s Lok Sabha, alleging that around 20 to 25 Congress Members of Parliament forcefully entered Speaker Om Birla’s chamber and verbally abused him during a recent session. Rijiju stated that the incident — which reportedly took place as tensions climbed over procedural disputes — was unprecedented and reflected a serious breach of established parliamentary conduct and decorum. According to his account to reporters, senior Congress leaders were present at the scene, and the Speaker’s traditionally respected office was undermined in a way he described as deeply troubling.
The allegation adds to a series of confrontations between the ruling party and the opposition in Parliament, particularly during heated debates on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address and related procedural disagreements. Rijiju also condemned what he called repeated breaches of parliamentary norms by opposition members and urged all sides to uphold the dignity of the House. The developments highlight sharply rising political tensions in the legislature, with both procedural disputes and public accusations contributing to a charged atmosphere in India’s central legislative chamber.
