Narmada Parikrama Devotees Risk Lives in Overcrowded Boat Crossing in Bharuch, Gujarat

Hundreds of pilgrims participating in the sacred Narmada Parikrama in Gujarat’s Bharuch district were reportedly forced to cross the Narmada River in dangerously overcrowded boats, raising serious safety concerns. Devotees undertaking the religious journey gathered near the riverbanks to continue the traditional pilgrimage route, but limited boat services caused heavy crowding. Witnesses said many boats were filled beyond safe capacity, with several passengers traveling without life jackets or proper safety measures.

Local observers warned that such overcrowding puts devotees’ lives at risk, especially during peak pilgrimage days when thousands arrive to perform the ritual circumambulation of the Narmada River. The Uttarvahini Narmada Parikrama, a revered spiritual journey held annually in Gujarat, attracts massive numbers of pilgrims who cross the river at designated ghats to complete the sacred route. Authorities and residents have urged improved crowd management and stricter safety monitoring to prevent accidents during the pilgrimage.
