The Central Government has announced a significant reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel, lowering taxes by ₹10 per litre on both fuels. The decision comes amid rising global crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains. Officials stated that the move is aimed at protecting consumers from inflationary pressure while ensuring stability in domestic fuel pricing.
Under the revised structure, the special additional excise duty on petrol has been reduced from ₹13 to ₹3 per litre, while diesel duty has been brought down to zero. However, experts suggest that this tax cut may not immediately translate into lower fuel prices, as oil marketing companies are currently absorbing high international costs. The government has also indicated that the situation will be reviewed every 15 days to respond to market fluctuations and ensure price stability.
